ALL ABOUT US ~ Who we are and what we do.
View the photographs and read the text to learn about what we do and what we have to offer the Family History Researcher.

Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society was founded in 1987 to encourage the study of family history, genealogy and the local history of the South West of Scotland.
The area today known as Dumfries and Galloway formerly comprised the separate Scottish counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire.

A Friendly Welcome
The home base of the Society is Dumfries & Galloway Family History Research Centre in the town of Dumfries.  Visitors to the D&G area, whether members or not, are always given a friendly welcome by the volunteers who run the Centre.
The Research Centre is located next door to Merlin, an Office Supplies and
equipment retailer, on the corner of Galloway Street and Glasgow Street.

We have no paid staff
Our Duty Volunteers are all multi-tasking.  A visitor may find them very busy with the Society's administration, like Jean and Ian below.  You, the visiting researcher, will be given first priority.
Volunteers are always ready to advise and help you to access our library of resources.

The Centre holds an extensive library of books, documents, directories, newspaper indexes, CDs microfilm and fiche.  Fiche and film readers, a computer, a microfiche printer and microfilm printer are all available for the use of visitors.   Our duty volunteers will assist where possible. There is also a sales area offering a variety of genealogical and local history resources.
When we don't have what you want we will try to tell you where you can go to get it.
Please Note:
Non-members with an interest in the area, will be invited to join the Society.
There is no obligation to do so, but many visitors offer donations towards our running costs.
Membership is World-Wide
Current membership of the Society exceeds fifteen-hundred. Membership is world wide
with about one-third overseas,  mainly located in Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand.
Click HERE for Membership details Overseas members are able to pay subscriptions, purchase publications, etc. in dollar cheques of their own currency, thanks to the good offices of our member-agents in each of those countries.
Membership is not expensive. Visitors to our Research Centre, with roots in Dumfries and Galloway, will be given information about the Society and invited to join, but there is no obligation to do so.
