| During 1970 and 1971 the late Robert A (Archie) Shannon, FSA Scot, Eastriggs, scoured the Annandale Observer from its inception in 1857 up to 1907 for items and announcements about Annandale emigrants. It contains a wealth of information about people who emigrated from this area to all parts of the world. A typical entry reads Death 1871 9th March: At Napier, New Zealand on the 28th December last, George Hastie aged 31 years, son of the late Mr John Hastie of Gallaberry, Annan. Also Grace Hastie, wife of the above aged 32 years and their daughter, both of whom died in September last. And another, Marriage 1860 7th June - At Lockerbie, Canada West on the 10th April, Margaret Davidson, youngest daughter of the late Mr James Davidson, parochial schoolmaster, Dryfesdale to James Irving, joiner of Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. And occasionally announcements like this 1861 Shipment of Stock: 11th April - Shipment of Stock for America. Yesterday the 'Helen Douglas' at Annan started from Annan Waterfoot for Quebec freighted with a bulk cargo of stock for America. She had been chartered by 3 parties who have been here for some months purchasing stock for shipment to Canada and New York State, namely Mr George Miller of Markham, near Toronto, formerly of Riggfoot in the Parish of Cummertrees when he revisited his native country after the absence of 30 years, Simon Beattie also from Markham, a nephew of Mr James Beattie, Newbie, and Mr Brodie of New York State, a native of Ayrshire. And even mini family trees 1881 11th March: Dumfriesshire element in General Garfield's Ministry. John McVeigh married Susan Roddan of Pleasance, Kirkmichael, Dumfries and, with the family, emigrated about 47 years ago to Ohio, USA. The second son John married a Miss Wayne of Mug's County, Ohio. She died in 1855 and left with other issue, a son John Wayne McVeigh who studied law and practised very successfully in Presburgh, Pennsylvania, was elected to the Senate, and has been chosen by General Garfield, the new President, to form one of his cabinet with the office of Attorney General of the USA. He is first cousin to Mr James McVeigh residing at Glencaple, Dumfriesshire. |
